With the new Hypnosis album, the more mature Magnetia Orchestra creates strong moods, which show the presence and subtle communication between the players. The strongly improvising, acoustic quartet is at the same time a rooted, classical jazz ensemble, but also a creative unit strongly attached to contemporary jazz, whose imaginative, expressive and open-minded making of music has garnered much praise. Lyytinen’s subtle compositions provide a favorable framework for each player’s strengths. The self-sounding blowers Lyytinen and Pohjola form a strong pair of radar with the support of double bassist Tikkanen and drummer Kallio, effortlessly and surprisingly. The new “Hypnosis” album takes the listener’s debut album to the most ethereal soundscapes, exploring the essences of the subconscious, time and space according to the title. Kallio’s beautiful-sounding Gongs and the plus pedals closely resembling the sustain pedal of Lyytinen and Pohjola piano bring new elements to the instrumentation.
